McCain Chooses a Running Mate: Sarah Palin

John McCain picks Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for his running mate.

She's only been Governor of Alaska since 2006.

She's 44.

Her last job before that was Mayor of a town of 9,000.

She's literally in bed with big oil - her husband is big with BP.

She's already under investigation for corruption.

No Washington experience.

Nada on foreign policy.

She's an evangelical who believes in creationism.

She's pro-life with a Downs Syndrome infant.

This is obviously a pick to go after disaffected Hillary voters. If Hillary wants to earn her keep and prove that she's a team player, she'll go out there after her.

McAncient turned 72 today. And THIS woman is ready to be President?

From Ta-Nehisi Coates:

Is the experience argument over?

Isn't the biggest problem with a Sarah Palin pick that by McCain's own standard, she fails:

John McCain's central and best argument in this campaign is that Barack Obama simply lacks the experience to be President of the United States. And now John McCain, who is a cancer survivor who turns 72 years old today, is picking a vice presidential nominee who has been governor of a small state for less than two years and prior to that was mayor of a town with roughly one-twenty-seventh of the citizens that Barack Obama represented when he was a state senator in Illinois.

Also, if you're making a play for Hillary voters---older, middle-aged white women in rust-belt states--is the way to get it done by bypassing, say, Carly Fiorina and Kay Bailey Hutchison, to pick a former Ms. Alaska who's only been governor for two years? There's a meme about Barack Obama reminding older women of the slick, handsome guy who beat them out for a big promotion, even though they were more qualified. But here's another very likely meme--Sarah Palin as the inexperienced, younger, attractive woman who beats them out for a promotion, even though they were more qualified.

UPDATE: Just want to bang on that last point a little more, as I just got off the phone with Kenyatta. I think there are some weakness to being a party associated with identity politics, and hopefully, the Dems are moving past that. But if you think about it, this is the sort of mistake you make when you have only a vague understanding of sexism and women's issues. I may be very, very, very wrong about this, but let me go out on a limb. I think "Hillary voters" can only resent Barack Obama but so much because he actually won an election. He wasn't appointed--he actually won, and that's a crucial difference.

Palin was appointed by a 72-year old man who passed over many more qualified, older women for a much younger, former runner-up for Mrs. Alaska with a thin resume. Add in the fact that this is a dude who left his wife after coming home from Vietnam for a much younger rich, former rodeo queen and you have the makings of a narrative. And it's not the sort of narrative that attracts "Hillary voters,"--it's the sort of narrative that attracts dirty old men. To be clear, I'm not saying that that's what McCain is. In fact, I think it's the opposite--this looks more hamfisted than sexist.

In my opinion, this is not good.
This is John McCain’s best move yet.

Its shrewd and its a very well calculated choice. She plays well to every Republican interest group.

•Christian Conservatives
•Pro-Life

She’s Pro Life –
Mother of five children which include a Down-Syndrome Child that she had the choice to abort but did not.

•NRA – National Rifle Association
She’s a member

•Oil Men –
She’s for drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge
80% of all revenues she has managed comes from Alaska’s oil

•Hawks
Oldest son joined Army last year on his way to Iraq in September

•Executive Style
She uses her executive privileges at will
She’s under investigation for firing a Commissioner because he wouldn’t fire her State Trooper ex-brother-in- law.

She's an excellent speaker and Joe Biden might become the new Arlen Specter (remember his interrogation of Anita Hill). If Biden uses his sharp knife on her women especially Hillary women will come to her defense.

This move will really hurt Obama and the DNC's efforts to get Hillary supporters back in the fold.

With this ticket as protest opinion, I think the die-hard Hillary supporters will pull the level for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

die-hard Hillary supporters have nothing in common with this woman - other than she's a woman.

that's it.

the equivalent would have been to put Alan Keyes on the ticket and think Black folk would vote for him.

You hit Barack Obama on ' experience', and then choose someone who's been Governor for 2 years with NO foreign policy experience at all. And, this man is SEVENTY-TWO

I agree with the part about Hillary going after the pick. I think she becomes even more important of a surrogate now. Obviously her supporters were the target of this pick and she would be the optimal person to rebut Palin. Now we will find out if everything said at the convention was for her own political career or for the Democratic Party.

To vote Republican is not a logical reasonable act. Remember Debra Bartoschevich the Hillary Supporter in John McCain’s ad that was encouraging Hillary women to vote for McCain. All the news media reports she is clueless and thinks McCain is “Pro Choice.”

Check out all these Hillary Supporters websites John McCain and Sarah Palin ticket has been accepted already.

What amazes me about these Hillary Supporters are that they claim to still be Hillary supporters, not former Hillary Supporters. The two most acknowledged groups are the PUMA (Party Unity My Ass) and Hillary Voters 4 McCain.

I have been going to the websites for a while. I wish I had copied the PUMA http://www.puma08.com/
blog list when it was up there but it has been removed. The http://www.hillaryvoters4mccain.com/ below features the Uhuru Movement from Petersburg, Florida that interrupted altered the video it has when questioning Barack.

If you go to YOUTUBE a voice that tries to sound like Barack is transposed into the video to distort the actual facts and Barack's "hold on" is looped to make it appear that he was unable to or hesitated to answer them. These protesters say Obama is White Power and that Obama is not for the Black Community. UHURUNEWS.COM, Diop Olugbala, InPDUM International Organizer, Uhuru Movement, Petersburg, Florida.

AI,

Iwas wondering if you think that they won't cause anymore mischief with Russia for the rest of the election season?

Let's be careful to NOT fall for the "game" being played.

I'd bet money that PUMA and other (not all_but most) like groups are actually groups that were formed by mostly Rethuglicans on the DL pretending to be "disaffected" Hillary supporters.

Are there still some "disaffecetd" Hillary voters out there? Yep.

But I don't think the percentage is large at all. And I certainly don't think the majority of that number would vote for Barack EVEN if he paid their mortgage off.

But more importanly, I am reminded that the Rethuglicans are nothing if not as Corrupt and as Deceptive as h*ll.

They're behind a lot of this!

And this lates move by McSenile shows that the Rethugs are also feeling extremely desperate, which in my opinion, also means they're very dangerous!

But Rikyrah...that's all that matters to them. That's all they need to see. Gender was their only real agenda all along. This proves it.

Apparently these crazed Clinton folks are overjoyed by the Palin pick. They are too gullible to see it for the ploy and insult that it really is. (perhaps "gullible" is too nice a word for these women).

It also shows that many were never true Progressive Democrats. It appears that many of them were dissaffected independents and Republicans who were primarily concerned with having a women in high office...and were attracted to the Dem side after Hillary announced her run. That would explain the Republican-like Race...and it would also explain what I had stated several times... that Hillary was acting more like a Republican....now you see why. Look at her appeal to Republican/Conservative women.
Either that...or they are so bothered by race that they are willing to vote against their own best interests as a way to vote against a Black male candidate... because God knows we can't allow a Negro into the White House (unless he's cleaning the floors).

They complain about so-called sexism against Hillary (which didn't even come from the Obama camp if it came at all).... yet they are too brainless to see how much racism and bigotry they have been demonstrating this whole time.

I wish... as we type they are looking for new ways to antagonize Russia. It's not just Georgia... there are a list of issues that have Russians angry (even the average Russian citizen).

*The so-called Missile Defense system in Eastern Europe...on Russia's doorstep.

*The U.S. relationship w/ Ukraine.

*The reckless expansion of NATO.

*U.S. ships in the Black Sea (where they don't belong... it's like having Russian combat ships in Lake Michigan).

*The U.S. military presence in several other former Soviet Republics (imagine having Russian bases in Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Alaska- after it hypothetically broke away from the U.S., Burmuda, with Russian anti-missile systems in Canada).

The U.S. would go completely bonkers if anything close to the above ever materialized...and the people would feel seriously threatened.

*The U.S. reliance on the use of force to solve international disputes.

* The U.S. military holding exercises within a stones throw of Russian territory (constantly) causing the Russians to be on alert.

* The U.S. resistence to enter into arms control/peace treaty agreements...and it's reluctance to stick with agreements that have been in effect for decades.

*Americans instigating in Georgia... training the Georgian military and emboldening the reckless political leadership in that Country and encouraging the conflict.

*The Russians are still upset about the attack on Yugoslavia...and what happened later in Kosovo.

*The U.S.'s blind support of (and complete submission to) Israel in its conflict with Palestine...and its war of words with Syria and Iran.

*The U.S. doctrine of Pre-emptive war/pre-emptive attack.

*The lack of U.S. flexibility in negotiations regarding Iran and North Korea.

*The U.S. meddling in Chechnya (Russian civil war)

*The constant U.S. antagonism against Russia and the Russian people.... putting them down all these years (they are tired of it...and they have probably reached their limit. This is why they support their leaders when they lash out militarily.... this is actually a troubling development.) The U.S. has now militarized Russia and the Russian people and they have spawned a wave of Nationalism there that will come back to haunt us. This state of mind makes it easier for Russian leaders to launch wars.

____________________

If we saw things from Russia's position, Americans might be more moderate in their view of the Russia-Georgia situation.

Americans don't tend to have the background info on a lot of these conflicts... all they know (all they are told) is that Georgia was attacked by Russia. They don't have the info on what happened before that. Americans just don't pay attention to these stories...and they easily have their perception shaped by American media.
